cover_final_four.jpgThis year's Final Four includes nary a name that casual hoop fans would know. Will it be hard to create an "All-Final Four" team without a single player likely to go in the lottery next year? Maybe. Maybe not. I'm still pretty pumped up about it, however, especially if George Mason can keep their glass hightops laced up for a run at immortality.

cover_bonds_deathstar.jpgThe midnight hour is about to strike for baseball's integrity in the wake of a steriod plagued decade or so. They can't kick the can further down the road anymore. Either the baseball powers look the other way at Bonds and his obliteration of a most hallowed record, or they step up and do something. What exactly? I don't know. Something. Anything. I know this much, it won't be boring, no matter how it goes.

cover_womenhoop.jpgMost men call it "unwatchable" but it really isn't that bad. It's just that women's basketball doesn't offer anything that we can't already get from the men's game. And yeah, lack of dunking does matter. But what most alienates men from the women's game is being lectured to by supporters, who say we really NEED to be watching. No, we don't. So why not just let the game speak for itself?

cover_vegasguys.jpgThe First Annual "Sportstalk 980 Vegas Spectacular" was everything we could have hoped for and then some! The Four Not-So-Wise Men you see here, led a group of about 24 winners and guests to the nirvana known as Mandalay Bay for 3 days and 2 nights of frolic and March Madness. Even though they say it "stays in Vegas" I'll give you a quick recap of some of the better moments.

cover_masoncinderella.jpgYou know those cute little contests online which promise $1 million if you pick a "perfect bracket?" How many people even had a "perfect Final Four" this year? Maybe 1/2 of one percent. Maybe? This year's gathering in Indianapolis was supposed to be NCAA bluebloods. Duke, UConn, Villanova and maybe a hot Memphis club. Instead, it's the most wide open Final Four ever. Soak it in. Enjoy.

cover_augusta.jpgAs the boys on Magnolia Lane try to keep up with hyper-faced titanium missile launchers, Augusta National keeps evolving in ways meant to keep the golf course from having its pants pulled down around its ankles every spring. But is more lenth really the answer? Who knows if Bobby Jones were still alive if he might have had other ideas?

Some cities are know for being great "convention" towns. And certainly Las Vegas is just that. But more importantly, Vegas has become middle-aged-married-guy's ultimate "re-union town." It doesn't matter who exactly is in your "group" or why you decide to get together the weekend you do. The bottom line, is that it's usually Vegas or bust.

cover_ramseyx.jpgLook, I know that the kid will probably never be a viable starting QB in the NFL. I know that he's not just slow footed, but lead footed. And I've heard the reports about how uncoachable he really is behind the scenes. Bottom line, however, is that the Redskins are turning former high draft picks into untradeable junk. That ain't good.

cover_upsets.jpgThat thudding sound you heard all last week and weekend was that of supposedly "heavyweight" tourney teams taking hard falls to the canvas and not getting up. What accounts for this latest rash of upsets in the NCAAs? Alot of things, I bet. Some reasons more than others. No matter what it is, the big boys have been put on notice!

cover_larranaga.jpgThey say that being a great coach requires handling certain tough situations the same way, every time, no matter what. Easier said than done. But one coach did just that in the NCAA tournament this year, and his team responded with pride to deliver George Mason basketball one of it's finest moments in school history.

cover_office.jpgA lot of hype out there about workers leaving their oars on the big corporate American slave ships this week, isn't there? Billions of "lost productivity." You know what accounts for that? Something called a "staff meeting." Don't lecture me about "lost productivity." If everybody did their job half-right most of the time, companies would run like a purring kitten.

cover_tigers.jpgIt's tourney time! And I am fearlessly jumping on the Calipari train. Why? Because it seems like nobody else is. I know, not very "sophisticated" in terms of hoop prognostication, but it is what it is. Best of all, if Cal cuts 'em down, maybe John Cheney will come out of retirement to fight him.

ncaa_nuggets.jpgThe best part of this week in sports talk radio, is just listening. If you keep your ears open, you'll hear alot of very provocative arguments, factoids, and lines of analysis. You'll also hear some idiots just pimpin' their school. Fine. You readers have been good enough to share some with me, and I happily pass these tasties along for everyone's enjoyment.

cover_skins_saunders.jpgI guess it makes sense. If you hire an offensive "guru" like Al Saunders to supercharge your "O" then you should not make him do it all on smoke and mirrors. The Skins have added two "name" receivers, but they are hardly "A-list" players in terms of numbers. Was it overkill? And are they the right "fit" with existing stud Santana Moss? Time will tell....

cover_valvano.jpgNothing excites quite like this month. Nothing. The NCAA Tournament is about to remind us why it remains a sports fan's pure joy. Not just looking over brackets and starting arguments. Not just staying up late to watch games from places like Boise and Albequerque. Not just buzzer beaters and water cooler talk at the office. It's all of it, and then some. Viva March Madness!

cover_savanna.jpgThe NFL avoided labor disaster last week, securing for another 6 years a peaceful existence atop the sports food chain in this country. Remarkably, the guy who helped deliver a midnight miracle was Paul Tagliabue himself, a non-confrontational lawyer who somehow painted a stark enough picture of the economic nightmare the owners were about to walk into if they didn't get a deal.

cover_parkingskins.jpgAs a believer in market driven economies and man's free will, I never bemoan the rising cost of being a sports fan these days. So in that sense you can forget me sweating Dan Snyder's recent move to jack parking costs up to $35 per game. But on another level, I do wonder at what point Skins fans just stop attending games in person in favor of thier cozy HDTV in the basement?

cover_bondsprogression.jpgIt's not going to be a pretty season for Barry Bonds. That much is sure. If he stays healthy and he hits home runs, the questions about this story unfolding now, will dog him all summer. And if he gets perilously close to legend Hank Aaron then MLB will be in a tight spot. Do they ignore the chase? Embrace it? Keep it at arms length? Baseball's only hope is that this year is a swan song for Bonds.

cover_levarcopter.jpgThe problem with LaVar Arrington and the Redskins is that you just can't pin the blame on either side, or any one person. It's a shared thing. He should have hired better agents, and been less of a free lancer. But the team should have put aside their petty feelings and worked to maximize him anyway. And the money. You just knew the money would catch up in the end....

cover_redick.jpgA lot of people far smarter than me in the world of college and pro hoops have said J.J. Redick will be "just fine" in the NBA. I'd like them to define what "just fine" means, exactly. Because I don't see it. And look, I love the kid for what he's done to his game in college. He's improved steadily every year, and is as deadly a shooter as you'll find. But then again, so was Steve Alford.

cover_davis.jpgEveryone says: "You have nothing to gain and everything to lose" at the NFL combine. Oh really? Don't tell that to Maryland TE Vernon Davis who dropped stopwatches and jaws with his beastly workouts. In the process he shot up to Top-5 status, and may soon make Kellen "Warrior" Winslow look like a joke at the position. You'll be hearing more about this kid soon...

cover_gateshell.jpgYou know the phrase "On Any Given Sunday?" Well, that expression might soon be as extinct as the drop-kick. Or not. Nobody will really know until all this plays out. But it seems clear, that a vanguard of a dozen owners is not afraid of a capless NFL. And neither is Gene Upshaw or the players. Looks like they might get their wish. And we know the expression about that one too....
