Alright you loyal Czabe.com readers. I hope you don't mind, but I'm taking two days off after today. Goin' golfin'. Just me and 23 of my close gambling, drinking, degenerate buddies. Hello Pinehurst. Not the over-rated #2, or anywhere else at the actual Resort. Nope, just a little nice spot tucked away, that I'm not going to tell you about. Can't have you guys crowding my getaway course!
As men who love sports, I understand that it is hard-coded into our DNA to argue. Argue, argue, argue. God, do we love it. And so do I. But let's please limit our arguments to things that are at least within 3 years of happening, not say TWENTY! There's nothing more insipid than getting worked up over things that aren't likely to actually happen until our kids our out of college.
The fact that somebody has a criminal record, doesn't mean they can't ever be telling the truth about a possible attack against them. But when it's a purely he said v. she said situation, then the focus rightly shifts to the subject of: "Well then, who is more believable?" The more you know about this woman, the more you should doubt.
I've bought every swing gadget known to man. I take lessons from a certified PGA Professional. I hit buckets of balls in the winter. I do golf stretching exercises. And you know what all this huffing and puffing does to improve my move? Nothing. Nada. Zippy. I've got the still frame sequence to prove it. If my swing is this annoyingly consistent, how come I still suck?
The Portland Trailblazers are on the block. Any takers? I mean, who wouldn't want to sink some 300+ million into an NBA franchise that has had enough illegal activity, assault, and drug use in the last decade to drive fan loyalty right into the ditch? Maybe they could just relocate the team to Deadwood and call them the "F'ing C's" in honor of Al Swearengen's favorite term.
There's plenty of sexy story lines in the Duke Lacross rape case. A classic he said/she said, couched in a racial cauldron of tensions in Durham, NC. Plus, there's the priviledged white overclass at Duke, vs the struggling black underclass at NC Central. Throw in DNA evidence, witness testimony, attacks on the victim's integrity, and you've got yourself a good 6 months of TV programming.
When it comes to gathering family for big important holidays with the fancy silverware, how come some bad traditions just linger along without challenge? Like, say, ham. Ham is lame. Nobody really likes ham. They just SAY they like ham. At best, ham is a complementary meat, a Scottie Pippen type meat, that needs some other meat to be the star.
The charm of having a baseball team to really call your own, is that it's almost fun to complain about it. And complain, I will. Look, I don't expect a playoff contender, but simple front office competence would be nice. To date, our GM/Show Pony Jim Bowden has looked good only in filling out a suit and tie, not a roster.
No doubt, the blocked shot in basketball is an opportunity for a player to roar, strut, and otherwise proclaim his domination over another player. But what is a block worth? Good question, and an argument that has been raging on our show lately. Maybe there is no definitive answer, but this nerdy little book report on the block (or "stuff" as hardly anyone calls it now) might shed some light.
The buzzphrase around internet circles right now is: "viral video." You know, the kind of video clips you see posted at Czabe.com or any number of thousands of thousands of websites around the world. Catch something stupid, funny, disgusting, or whatever and email it to every corner of the globe in seconds. Well, here's one that is totally clean, and totally a hoot, especially if you love baseball!
It used to be that going to a Redskin game was special. Something rare, almost. You'd proudly whisper it all week to friends and co-workers. Now, any mention of heading out to FedEx is immediately followed by "Oh yeah, what color parking do you have?" Is the game day experience for Redskins games in danger of causing a steady exodus of ticket holders? We shall see.
Not that anybody would dare do it, but how soon can we start the talk of Mickelson winning the two Opens coming up to complete the Phil Slam? I mean, he's halfway home, hotter than hell right now, and full of confidence. The difference between how Phil used to play when Major heat was bearing down on him, and how he plays now is dramatic. Look out, the floodgates might just be open.
For almost a year and a half now, people have kept asking me: "Is there anywhere I can hear your Fox show in D.C.? And how come 980 doesn't carry it?" Well, those questions will all end in the next few months! Our show is scheduled to debut on Sportstalk 980 from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. beginning in July. I would give you the whole song and dance about why it took this long, but who really cares? We're comin'. Be ready!
Ah yes, golf's un-official "Opening Day" has finally arrived! And it's not just the anticipation of seeing magnolia, dogwood, and azalea clad acres of green perfection on our TV sets. It's the fact that the Masters has consistently delivered some of the best, most riveting, and often simply unbelievable moments in major golf history. Will this year do the same? Chances are, yes!
If it weren't for me bringing up here name, how many other media outlets do you think would mention "Martha Burk" this week at the Masters? The media has their pet causes, and they adopted hers for about a year. But once they saw that she was a clear and emphatic loser in all regards, they dropped it quietly and moved on. Maybe you should taunt your local newspaper editor with a question: "What happened?"
Sports traditions are often born out of the spontaneous act of joy that comes from winning. Take for example the winners "plunge" at the Nabisco Championship on the LPGA. It's been a "tradition" for almost 20 years now, but apparently some of the clean freak gals on the tour didn't like the thought of perhaps "swimming with the turtles" if they should win.
For all the times that big sporting events live up to, or even surpass the hype, there are countless others that were hardly worth the electricity to keep the TV turned on. Well, you can count Saturday's double-header among them. What a snooze. So it's UCLA-Florida for all the marbles. Okay. Whatever. Just try to make it close.
