cover_rams_ravens.jpgIn the Gateway City, I am sure most fans are simply relieved. Scott Linehan has an excellent offensive pedigree – as a coordinator. Head coach? Who knows. He’s never worn the big boss hat in the NFL, and one league writer I spoke to said he was almost never on any team’s “short list” until this year.

cover_brad_dante.jpgBoy, could more people be riding the ‘Fish as their “darkhorse” team to win it all this year? I don’t exactly get it, other than the 6 game winning streak to end their season, and the addition of Dante Culpepper. Let me throw some cold water on all that for a second. At least in Minnesota, everybody pretty much accepts that it's a rebuilding year.

cover_chargers_cowboys.jpg Marty is officially on the hot seat. And now Philip Rivers is driving the car. It is pretty amazing, really. Here’s a team which recently made the playoffs with a Pro Bowl QB – and a guy who has become a real savvy, team leader – and they are switching to a guy who’s a total unknown.

cover_falcons_chiefs.jpgHerman Edwards comes to town, and just in case anyone forgot: “You play to win the game! Hello?” Okay, now that THAT’s out of the way, let’s look at the Chiefs. Great offense, great back ready to kick ass in Larry Johson, aging A-list TE in Tony Gonzalez, middling receivers, solid B+ QB who is starting to slide in Trent Green.

cover_bengals_jags.jpgAFC contenders Jacksonville and Cincinnati need better balance on both sides of the ball. The Jags can pound with anybody on defense, all day long. Don't ask about scoring however. Meanwhile, Cincinnati is a very fun team to watch. Lots of passing, Chad Johnson gettin' down in the endzone. But how about stopping somebody? It's all about balance.

cover_bucs_giants.jpgWho ever thought we'd be seeing Phil Simms' kid and Peyton Manning's lil' brother as the central figures in two teams that believe they are "on the verge" of something big? In the case of the Giants, only a injury riddled defense kept them from being very dangerous. The Bucs however, were a more "ugly" division winner last year because of a halting offense.

cover_bears_redskins.jpgThe Bears and Redskins had somewhat of "suprise" seasons with 10+ wins. But each team also had flaws. This year, both clubs have - on paper at least - plugged their most pressing holes. Will that hold up under the fire of the actual NFL season? Well, that's why we'll play these games to find out. Two a days, continue, so put on the pads!

cover_broncos_panthers.jpgIf you believe in the "succession" theory, then you probably like the chances for Carolina and Denver to make it to this year's Super Bowl. Both were agonizingly close last year, and have seemingly plugged the key holes from last year's failed attempt. If you like Denver, then Jake might still scare you. As for Carolina, everybody seems to be in love with them.

cover_steelersseahawks.jpgIt's not quite opening of training camp time, but you know what? Why wait? Plenty to discuss already, and I'll start with my first "Two A Day" by discussing the chances of last year's Super Bowl participants to repeat the feat. Both teams return good portions of the guys who got them there last year, but each has question marks. And motivation is always a prime concern.

cover_lobster.jpgWhen a school decides to junk it's academic integrity in pursuit of a pure felon, they better be damn sure the kid is going to pan out. In the case of Miami, well, I guess you live and learn. The now legendary Willie Williams is soon to be a (bad) memory arond Coral Gables. Few genuine tears, will be shed.

cover_wie_sick.jpgTalk about a wasted trip to tractor country. The fine folks out there notwithstanding, the Wie "legend" took quite a pounding this weekend in the heartland. Here was a weak field, on a course suited to her game, where she did well last year. Easy pickin's, right? Wrong. The funny thing about golf. It doesn't care. No really, just ask it.

cover_ben_helmet.jpgWhen death comes knocking on your door, and you somehow escape out the back, you figure to be a changed man. And maybe Ben Rothlisberger is indeed just that. But you would have a hard time knowing that from his first interview since the accident. The helmet you see him holding here, seems to be the only helmet he thinks is necessary. Still. Amazing.

cover_lonewie.jpgI suppose it'll be "amazing" if Michelle Wie finally makes a cut on the PGA Tour this week at the John Deere Classic. Certainly, the press will play it that way. What happens if she does make the cut? How many more will she play on the men's tour? Will the public quickly go: "Okay, fine. But how about winning?" There's a downside to this gambit, and it has merit.

cover_hr_derby.jpgThis just in: when Major League batters get to take BP, most of them can hit the stuffing out of the baseball. Wow. Okay, now that we've got that concept down, let's dig in and try to make the HR derby actually worth watching at the All-Star Break. I've got an idea that would take just $1 million, and a small fleet of Hummers.

cover_zidane.jpgWhen it comes to cowardly acts, always expect the unexpected from the French. Zinadine Zidane - a supposed international "star" - pulled a brainlock of all sporting brainlocks in the waning minutes of the World Cup Final with a head-butt so obvious, even Earl Hebner would have seen it. And down go the French! Down go the French! I gotta admit, it does feel good to see, and we can now pick up the used orange slices and go back to ignoring the sport for another 4 years.

cover_pcup.jpgThere's weekend golf pressure like getting off the first tee with a bunch of people watching you. Then there's pressure of playing a stranger for $100 when you only have $12 in your pocket. And then there's the pressure of playing for your team, and your state flag. That's the kind of pressure we look to create in the Potomac Cup! And you can be a part of it all! Here's how...

cover_sonnydawg.jpgIt's getting close to a summer tradition here in Washington D.C. The breathless excitement as the burgundy and gold heroes of the Redskins report for the first sweaty days of training camp in Ashburn. Some call these the "Dog Days" of summer. But me and some colleagues at the radio station know them as the "Dawg" days for another reason altogether.

cover_porn_dvd.jpgWhen it comes to bad athlete behavior, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are shaping up like the modern Sodom and Gommorah. From Denny Green chasing skirts around the office, to Smoot's Boob Cruise, to the Original Whizzinator, to Mike Tice and his ticket scalping, now this! The mother of all Playmakers-esque stories!

cover_beach.jpgAhhh. The cool beach sand in my toes. The warm sun on my back. The chilled MGD at my side. Where oh where, did my week off go? Someday people, I will become a big enough star to take TWO full weeks off at a time, and who knows what you'll do then! Of course, I will probably have hired an intern to post my porn, and dictated sports thoughts.
