Does coaching in the NFL require a degree of ruthlessness? I believe so. Not that you need to be a dictator, but I do think sometimes you just gotta do, what you gotta do. Already this year, alot of coaches have showed their teeth. But as for Joe Gibbs? Complete Teddy Bear. Must be nice if you are one of his players. You know, you're safe.
The Oregon State upset of USC has thrown a major twist in the BCS race with just 4 weeks to go. Now, at least 6 one-loss teams will have an argument to make, assuming that the winner of L'Ville v. West Virginia gets the expected Big East screwgie. Of course, a lot of weird things can happen between now and then.
For a sport whose regular season never seems to end, now the baseball post season looks like it might never end either! I think everybody can agree that the World Series is now starting way too damn late in the calendar, and that northern tier weather dimishes the overall experience of the World Series. But sadly, money and TV will prevent any sensible changes.
There hasn't been this much fuss over a little stain, since Bill Clinton crusted up a certain blue dress from the Gap in the Oval Office. Was Kenny Rogers cheating? Did Tony LaRussa fail to exploit a very exploitable advantage? And what exactly are the unwritten rules of baseball, and isn't it about time we started to actually write some of them down?
Maybe Joe Gibbs secretly wants to be a casino greeter type of head coach. A guy who basks in the love of the Redskins faithful, but is less concerned with actually trying to dig the team out of it. While he laments missing a chance at giving out more free autographs, he doesn't seem nearly as bothered by a team that is racing toward being one of the NFL's laughingstock clubs.
Czabe recounts his 20th high school reunion, with every awkward moment and botched name along the way. Like your high school reunion, there were some pleasant suprises along the way with awkward teenage girls who turned out to be elegant ladies twenty years later. About 8 hours and a dozen beers later, Czabe was stumbling into his folks crib, just like old times.
In a sports world in which everything has a price, and if not EBay will find that price, this story doesn't really shock me as much as it amaze me how Duke gets away with so much crap, without any real scrutiny from the media as a whole. Want to sell access to a closed practice for big bucks! Go ahead, Coach K does! And it's a sweet racket!
It wasn't that long ago, when Randy Moss was the talk of the NFL. He was a one man wrecking crew, a panacea for passing woes. A guy who really could go up there and make miracles happen. How far the guy has fallen now. Practically begging to be traded, with the Raiders hoping for offers, Randy remains a Raider. It might be his last stop.
If you want to know all the gory details of the T.J. Duckett compensation package due to Denver this spring, this article sheds plenty of light. In fact, the more I read about it, the more sick I started to feel about these deals. Denver comes across as polite to a fault, almost like they hope the Redskins draft pick gravy train never ends!
The individual losses for my Redskins keep piling up, but I find myself strangely at peace. Why? Because I have come to grips with the larger "macro" problems that exist with Dan Snyder's multi-billion amusement team. Last year, the humiliation was losing to Norv Turner and the Raiders. This year, the Titans get that honor. The following, addresses the core problems, not just the symptoms.
Chances are, if you see some kind of college football brawl, the Miami Hurricanes are in the middle of it. Oh sure, they don't own the patent on thuggery, but the 'Canes (or 'Cons) take it to a new level. Now, the program is so pathetic, that they'll even disgrace themselves against the lowest of the low in terms of opponents.
Looks like the Chicago Bears aren't just satisfied whuppin' ass on the rest of the NFL. They have now laid down the law to that bad dressing, midget dictator in North Korea. Personally, if we've got to send somebody over there to do the job, I want it to be "da Bearsss!" Of course, this kind of cockiness from fans, is exactly what gets perfect teams their first loss. Good comedy, bad karma.
So far the NBA season is off to a hot start off the court. After a season in which David Stern took steps to make his league look a little less spoiled and surly, we've now got players griping about a coming crackdown on ref baiting gestures and other acts of general bitchiness after getting called for a foul. Of course, Rasheed is not happy.
It looks like Joe Torre is going to survive yet again. And I am amazed. I am amazed that in a results oriented environment, and with the bar set so high, that a guy who has failed miserably in the post season the last 5 years, would be brought back for more.Perhaps I don’t worship at the Joe Torre altar like most media types. But for some reason, this guy is coated in pure Teflon.
First and foremost, NOTHING else matter if the defense does not get better – maybe 20% or more is vital. Repeat: NOTHING. Sure, there are issues with the offense. But consider the defense like a huge hole in the hull of the S.S. Redskin. While the ship’s engines (the offense) aren’t working at full speed right now, even if they were, eventually, this defense will sink the team.
How funny is it that at Florida, Chris Leak is the black QB, and Tim Tebow the freshman white QB – and they run with Tebow? In fact, they love how tough Tebow runs, that they’ll bring him in on obvious situations. The current chants of "Heisman" for Tebow are obviously premature. But they might not be far fetched for next year.
Every now and then, when I’m right, I am painfully right. I told you after the first few pre-season games, that the Tony Kornheiser I know, was not the same guy now doing MNF. The Tony that I know, has a wit to him that cuts to the bone. He’s quick and glib, and unafraid to gore sacred oxen.
Are there unforgiveable acts as a fan of a sports team? Is the mere thought - just thought, not action - of someday getting a divorce from your team inexcusable? I explore the complicated concept of being a fan, who also at times wants to simply end it all. I personally have had such dark thoughts. But I've never acted upon them, and hopefully never will.
I wish I had more time to personally correspond with readers and listeners. It's not because I don't value the caliber of letters I get via e-mail. In fact, quite often, you guys think and say things more eloquently than I ever could. So allow me at least today's edition of the Czabe, to comment on some recent contributions.
Forget 700 page playbooks, and all kinds of double-reverse trickeration. Winning in the NFL, is all about road-grading the uglies in front of you. When the Redskins o-line plays like they did on Sunday vs. the Jaguars, you can run a whole lot of seemingly simple plays for big yards. Right now, Al Saunders is smiling...
And so now, Ohio State is rollin’, and so are the Wolverines. Michigan looks better and better every week. And Chad Henne may soon make people say: “What was all the fuss about Matt Leinart anyway?” Certainly, Henne’s arm is stronger, and with studs like Mario Manningham to throw to… wow. Big Blue, is back.
