The NFL has a quarterback crisis. And it's not that there aren't enough qualified players for the 32 jobs. Such is the common complaint by NFL league office types, that the current violence of the game will decimate the QB ranks without serious protection. Well, it's now clear - the "cure" is worse than the disease.
In the dying throes of a busted season, stories like this bombshell expose on the Skins dysfunction by Tom Friend of ESPN The Magazine, happen all the time. Only with this team, and this year, it might just be the first piece of the space station that flies off as the whole expensive affair comes crashing back to earth.
As miserable as I am right now being a Redskins fan, I can always be thankful that I am not a Lions fan. In fact, it is amazing that such a "thing" even exists anymore: "Lions fan." I don't really know any. Of course, if you don't live in Detroit, why would you sign up for that kind of misery and ridicule. And after yesterday, the sad drumbeat of ineptitude continued....
God do I love food. Love it! Whenever there is despair in life with your sports teams, you can always fatten up for the winter. I know I have. Anyhow, I think I've finally "got it" when it comes to pizza. Having loved the food since I was a young little tyke (and who didn't?) it all makes sense to me now. What other foods "make sense" to you now?
Winning a few games, won't "fix" things. Neither will an off-season chock full of shiny new expensive free agents. No, the Redskins under Dan Snyder have created a perverse world of over-paid under-performers. Gibbs is just the latest passer-through of this ongoing debacle. Sad that he bought into it all. Call me, when something actually changes out there at Redskins Park.
For once, a sporting event that was hyped into a fine powder for weeks on end, actually left a tasty, satisfying residue on our sporting lips. Now, the big question is, will we get a second scoop in over a month and a half in the desert? I took out a yellow notepad, fired up the TIVO-to-live following my father-in-law's 70th birthday, and filed this report.
The end of the realistic portion of the Washington Redskins season came so suddenly last week in Philly. It wasn't just the pathetic 3 point output. It wasn't just the fact another long bomb got dropped on our heads. It wasn't even the loss of Clinton Portis. It was everything. The facade has crumbled down, and thus begins a new phase. Hold your hats, everybody.
So what? Bobby Knight slapped a kid. Big whoop. Right? Wrong? Well, I know this much: for something alot of people say is "no big deal" they sure are talking about it alot. I still like Knight, and don't think this kid will lose much sleep over the slap. But to call it not a slap, or pretend it wasn't insanely risky, is stupid. Here's why.
There's very little that SI.com's resident coffee blogger can't misunderstand about the game of football. And once he steps two inches off the NFL path, he's really lost! Get a load of his "take" on the Spurrier led 'Cocks being "unprepared" for their near-upset at Florida. Talk about not knowing his ass from a hole in the ground! Wow!
So now, the deed is done. Much to the shock of Redskin Nation, Joe Gibbs has actually pulled the plug on the Mark Brunell era by naming Jason Campbell his starter for the game on Sunday at Tampa.
Sports is meant to be about doing something preposterous. Something absurd. Something daring, and brash, and above your station in life. Rutgers football is doing just that right now, and it is hard not to be inspired. Perhaps more humble football schools will begin to rise up and challenge the status quo. Already, several are.
Are the 'Niners ready to up and skidaddle after their latest efforts at a new stadium in San Fran went belly up? Sure, they would probably only scoot down the road a bit, but it wouldn't be quite the same, now would it? Then again, maybe Irwindale still has their "Welcome Raiders" signs from 1987?
The return of Britney Spears to the competitive realm of uber-babedom is truly an exciting development. Who cares if she ever makes another crappy pop-candy album. We all just want her to get back to the lean, mean, sex-goddess machine that she was before the whole unfortunate K-Fed “return to my white trash Louisiana roots” thing.
What happens when psychotic parents become youth league commissioners with delusions of granduer for their kids? Well, here it is, in full disgusting glory. Granted, this kind of stuff happens all the time, but I dare say that a league officer effectively screwing a whole team out of the playoffs is hard to top.
You can watch a lifetime full of Sundays, and still not see a finish as absurdly impossible as the Redskins escape from the Cowboy clutches. This one, somehow, even topped the Skins "midnight miracle" from last season in Dallas. How bitter, it must taste to Cowboy fan. Of course, my Skins are hardly much better. Just a little bit more lucky.
Ol' JoePa doesn't move as quick as he used to. In fact, he's apparently blind to a fast moving play coming right at him on the sidelines. Obviously, we wish him the best of luck and the speediest of recoveries, but it does raise a practical question. How much longer will old coots like Joe and Bobby stick around?
Dan Snyder has his hands all over the Redskins "football operations." Don't believe anything else. He likes to pretend that he's "hands off" but in reality, until his personal lackey Vinny Cerrato leaves, nothing will really change. Leonard Shapiro properly takes Snyder to task for not being even remotely accountable to the press about his vision for the team.
What ever happened to simple PRIDE? The Miami Heat showing up to pick up their rings, and then going home for the night en route to a 42 point ass-whipping was a shameful way for the NBA season to begin. All I know, is that any champ from the 1980's, or any Jordan led championship team, would have never allowed such humiliation.
