Blog: September 2007 Archives
For months now, I have been saying that Rex Grossman was the subway line that had ended. There were no more stops left. End of the line. Yet there was Lovie, clicking his heels and repeating: “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home.”
Oklahoma football coach Mike Gundy was wrong, on several fronts. That doesn’t make columnist Jenni Carlson right. And I’m frankly getting pretty sick of you people – you know who you are! – saying that those of us “in” the “media” are “circling our wagons” around her.
Snyder doesn’t get it on many levels, but here’s the level which bothers me the most: accountability. Need a definition? Fine. Here. Accountable: “Liable to be required to give account, as of one's actions or of the discharge of a duty or trust.”
Par for this year was always 8-8. To think otherwise was foolish. This was a modestly talented team, with little depth, and using a brand new driver (Campbell). There was bound to be some ups and downs. But after the solid start, you hoped that maybe this season could be an overachieving one. Hot starts lead to momentum and confidence, two of the most precious – and elusive -commodities in football.
The Eagles were left for dead last Monday night. The QB stirred up a bunch of controversy, and then went out and played passing drills against the Lions. How can you figure out this league? Stop. Don't bother. What you see this week, may not even be close to what you see next.
I surmised on Bob & Brian’s Wacky Morning Zoo* (Note: Not really the name of the show, they just hate it when I call it that…) that there are “Four Horsemen of the Internet Apocalypse.” This based loosely after the Biblical reference of the same, I believe that some of the unintended consequences of our hyper-connected world are going to doom us all in good time.
What if - instead of McNabb’s ‘theory’ that black quarterbacks are more criticized than white ones – a white quarterback put out the theory that black QBs are just too “thin skinned” to absorb the natural heat that comes with the job? How would that go over?
While I’m not saying he’s “out of the woods” as a developing young QB in this league, I think I can say with confidence that he’s not going to be a bust. No chance. He’s over the Heath Shuler hump, he’s past Patrick Ramsey road, and there’s no need to even think about filling the all-important QB position on this team for years to come.
I predicted that the Saints were severely over-hyped based on last year, and that living with a bullseye would be completely different. I said that despite the glitzy offense last year, this team was a nightmare when it came to defending the deep pass. I pointed out their lackluster numbers on 3rd down trying to get teams off the field.
It is just me, or are you a touch disappointed that Miami beating Florida International 23-9 this Saturday went off without a hitch? I mean, after perhaps the greatest brawl in college football history I feel we were owed a rematch. No, instead the two teams took a knee together after the game for a prayer. Boo.
I’ve had a day to think about my previous thoughts on whether Bill Belichick and the Patriots gained a significant advantage by filming defensive coaching signals. Previously, I said that it could likely have only given them a “slight” advantage. I think I was dead wrong. Here’s why.
Others have hinted that somehow his “legacy” is now in jeopardy. Some have mentioned Nixonian parallels. Stop, stop, stop, stop. Belicheck’s coaching “legacy” is secure, he’ll always be a drip at cocktail parties, and unlike Nixon, Belichick is not going to get fired or suspended for more than a week over this.
Just 4 days into the Redskins season, we already have our first DEFCON 1 controversy. Why exactly, did Shawn Springs NOT start last weekend against Miami? The answer, as has been typical in the Snyder-Gibbs era, is simply lies and vengeance.
Halelujiah, a win is a win. Even the ugly nailbiters, like the Skins had against the Cam Camerons. Before we get carried away (and I hear Skins callers on WTEM do this all day on Monday) let’s remember this win was against…
This breathless pursuit of a non-story has been a giant case of journalistic fraud by ESPN for at least two weeks now. But ahhh, NASCAR is once again an official ESPN “property” and as such it attains a higher, more blessed status on the big Bristol bird. How much more blessed? Glad you asked.
Here's your annual "Clip N' Save" pre-season prediction page. Is it mostly a gut hunch? Of course? Will I sulk if I'm totally wrong? No. Will I gloat if I'm even tangentially right? Or course! Why else engage in this annual silliness. Enjoy.
Don’t even wait until next year. I’m serious. Shut it down. See what the PGA Tour players say then, when the overly generous $10 million prize for playing a “grueling” 4 weeks of golf in a row, is given to charity. Maybe then, the Tour players will realize how they are continuing a trend of being the most spoiled babies in professional sports.
If there's a more annoying thing than somebody foisting their fantasy football team on you, then I haven't heard of it. I HATE that guy. Well, I suppose I am now, THAT GUY myself. But, I have an excuse. People actually pepper me with emails, wanting to know. Lord knows why. So, here ya go. For what it's worth...
There’s a feeling that with a 16 team playoff in 1A, that the 16th place team would have no shot at winning a national title. How untrue. Consider too, how much value App State got out of winning the 1-AA playoffs the last two years. They were ready, and not intimidated. Michigan just showed up and expected to roll.
