Blog: March 2008 Archives
From the golf, to the gambling, to the bad beats, and all the glory that was Czabe's annual Vegas visit, Monday's blog waxes philosophic about what makes for a great trip to Sin City.
It’s off to Vegas this weekend, for the 3rd consecutive year of visiting Sin City during the Sweet 16. This after about 5 consecutive seasons of first weekend Madness.
Roy Williams is right. The NCAA is a bunch of science lab know-nothing when it comes to sports. Why else would they risk injuring some of their precious "student athletes" just because they must cover up somebody else's corporate logo. Absurd. Give 'em hell , Roy!
Some will say Dick Vitale should be in the college basketball Hall of Fame for “all he’s done to popularize the sport” over the years. They look at the approximate timeline of Vitale arriving at ESPN until now, note the explosion of money, interest, and teams capable of making a deep run in the Tournament in that span, and – voila! – say that a bald-headed one-eyed huckster is the reason for all of it!
The NCAA Tournament produced plenty of thrills and spills in Weekend #1. Either the committee doesn't know a lick about what they are doing with these seeds, or it has simply become impossible to properly bracket this annual toss-em-up. Meanwhile, I really wish somebody would go back to Bobby Knight and ask him one more time: what exactly is wrong with how we are doing things? Seems just fine to most of us!
Somewhere, Steve Irwin is saying: "Crikey mate!" Talk about freak ways to die, this one might just take grand prize. Meanwhile, the Red Sox stick to their guns, Barry Bonds is getting desperate, Matt Ryan is overhyped, and winter ain't gone yet from some parts of the country. Full coverage, in today's Daily Czabe.
Sorry this is a little bit late, but you still have a few hours to turn it in. At least if I happen to luck into some good predictions, I have this sheet posted on the record for my inevitable, and insufferable, bragging to come.
For years, I get about a dozen emails this time of year from listeners who have known me, and my show, from several stops back, and over 12 years. “Hey Czabe, are you ever going to bring back the Tournament of Babes?” Well, funny you should ask. I got this email yesterday, after discussing the concept on my show Tuesday morning…
Bobby Knight has been okay for ESPN. Not great, but not bad either. My priceless moment came when Vitale started full throating him to come back to Indiana. Knight's incredulous eyes just squinted to a near full close, probably thinking: "What an idiot!"
I'm back after a nasty tussle with the ol' Infuenza bug (and it ain't over yet!) and have some weekend mop-ups to handle, so bear with me. I'll start with Mini-Me Billy Crystal, who got into the box for the Yanks, and actually wasn't a total embarrassment.
But the new stadium had to be something special. It had to have the added ability to host really large crowds, not just 6-8 people, but 10-12 or more. It had to be self enclosed, with boosted audio and a triple window for keeping an eye on every three sporting events at once.
It’s impossible as a Republican not to delight in the turmoil of the Democrat party right now. As I said to a friend, it’s like your most hated neighbor is on vacation, and somebody let loose a full sized horse and a pitbull in their house and locked the door.
Right leaning adventure writer P.J. O’Rourke once wrote a book with this title back in 1994. I highly recommend it. Basically, he traveled to some of the worst countries in the world, and wrote about them with merciless honesty. Good stuff. Really made you appreciate how good we have it here in America.
God bless him, he’s simply had enough. I’ll credit a man for knowing his own limitations, and doing what he feels he needs to do when the time comes. Even when others around him, are quietly wondering if he’s lost his mind.
I have been talking about this undesired consequence of free agent spending for years in regard to the Redskins, and the corrosive effects I was CERTAIN it had on the locker room. But because the jealousy of other players almost always makes the complainers look petty and whiney, few dare speak out.
I no longer hate Peter King for the stupid crap he writes. Oh sure, his weekly blog “Monday Morning Quarterback” is still at times jaw-droppingly inane in its observations. He’s as self-serving as ever. His own “logic” at times falls apart like a napkin in a thunderstorm.
Czabe goes Old School today, with a 20-pack of "Remember When's..." in sports and pop culture. Czabe could crank these out all day. Please, keep your comments and replies to those items mentioned, including corrections and additions. Have fun...
Rather, this is a pitiless dancing on the grave of what his tenure here at QB represented. It was a crony hire, of a mostly washed up player, for too much money, and a totally unnecessary draft pick.
