Funk Report: Caddy Recap of Round One at Pinehurst
Here’s the daily report via email from Mark Long, Fred Funk’s caddy. Good, inside the ropes, inside the player-caddy “bubble” stuff that you never get to read. Enjoy…
Funkster shoots 73, +3....
A bit more than you'd want the first day...he 3-putted 10 from 25 feet to start...played decent thereafter...drove it well ( missed 5 fwys but 4 were in the first cut). Just a little off on the irons and a couple of chips. It was an even par type of round, really...a bit like the start last week at Congo. We go 7:22am Friday. I think he'll do better as the week goes on. But we need a 67 or 66 to really get us back in the thick, one of the three days. He definitely has that in him.
Course was set up VERY fair. I was surprised that 67 was low. There was a 66 or 65 out there. Greens rolled not too fast, held a touch better than you might expect. But the humidity drops tomorrow, and it wouldn't take much to get it all really tough, so let's hope there isn't some sinister force to take over at the USGA this weekend...
Played with the am just truned pro Spencer Levin. He normally hits it dead straight, but just signed a club deal and coincidentally maybe learned his first lesson as a pro...don't go to that new driver until you get it just right. He missed a lot of fairways and somehow shot +3...obviously he has a ton of game to do that. Pretty sharp chipper.
Allenby had a normal Allenby round...hit it like the leader, but a few poor chips and putts turned it into a 72. First hole, #10, 600+ yard par five...rips driver 3w about 40 feet. And 3 putts. Robert would be a top 10 player if that scoring department was just a touch sharper.
But is it fun to watch him hit it.
Big 5 lived up to their billing...they are all in it....I think Tiger missed a lot of fairways, but maybe he was first cut a bunch like Fred....DiMarco I think had 23 putts, that's nearly impossible here.
Fred is in a great mood. That usually translates to good scores....
I had an interesting night. Nick Seitz invited me to a Golf Digest thing. Dan Jenkins has a new book out. Even got one signed ("Golf is terrible for your mind-Dan")

What Would Irv Have Said?
Hi Steve:
When Bob brought up the other day the things may have been different with Brett had Irv been around, I really got to thinking. Since Holmgren, and likely Wolf departed, and his dad died, Favre has had no one to really fear. Next up, Ray Rhodes and Mike Sherman, who let him run wild. Since he didn't have accountability, he could become more of a diva with no one to bring him down to earth. By the time Thompson and McCarthy came along and weren't willing to let Brett walk all over the team, he had been unaccountable for long enough that he couldn't handle it and resented it. Hurt feelings resulted from him having to answer to someone for a change, and from fewer special "Brett rules".
I am very curious how he handles Mangini, whom I have been told by a Jets fan is hated by the players. And, wait till Mike Lupica shreds him by mid-October. Read the NY press, they are building him up and up, and they will love tearing him down.
See ya, donkey,
Terry Rindt
