Introducing the "Disposable High School"

God bless the fact that in big time HS hoops, free agency is alive and well….
CINCINNATI, OH – Top prep star O.J. Mayo said he will be in class Tuesday after transferring for his senior season from North College Hill in Cincinnati, making it three schools in four years. Mayo played for Rose Hill Christian in Ashland, Ky., as a freshman, earning first-team all-state honors after leading the school to the state tournament.
Said Mayo, who did not comment on his reasons for the move: "It's exciting to go home, but it's sad leaving North College Hill. I consider Cincinnati a second home."
As a junior, Mayo helped NCH (26-1), No. 3 in USA TODAY's final Super 25 rankings in 2006, win its second consecutive Division III state title in March. Additionally, he was named Ohio's Mr. Basketball for the second consecutive year after averaging 28.8 points.
Mayo's move means childhood friend Bill Walker will finish his senior year at North College Hill alone. Recently, the 6-6 Walker was declared ineligible for the 2006-07 season by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Mayo, who said he'll miss playing with Walker, has not announced his college choice.
Huntington, two-time defending champion of West Virginia's largest classification (AAA), already returns three Division I-caliber players, most notably 6-8, 235-pound power forward Patrick Patterson, whose college suitors include Florida, Kentucky, Duke, Virginia and Wake Forest.
REACT: Well, well, well. Isn’t that convenient? He leaves his current school when is buddy is clipped for the season on eligibility. And he magically lands at a team which is already loaded. What a country! What a system! Here, we have everything that’s disposable. Disposable razors, cameras, even disposable High Schools! When you are tired of one of them, just get another!

I’m starting to get sucked into poker on ESPN. Mind you, I have NEVER PLAYED A SINGLE HAND OF TEXAS HOLD ‘EM IN MY LIFE!!!!! But the TV freak show is too much to pass up I’m finding. It’s funny to see Celine Dion’s rich-ass husband get bum rushed out of the WSOP by some carburetor repairman from Little Rock. Still, the thought of devoting substantial amounts of time trying to “get good” at poker, strikes me as shamefully absurd. If you sink 1000 hours a year into playing poker (about 3 hours a day, which isn’t that unrealistic for hardcore guys) don’t you stop at some point and say: “Where is this leading me, exactly?” Couldn’t you do something far more enriching personally or professionally with 1000 man hours during a calendar year? I don’t play Texas Hold ‘Em, because I sense that I would like it. And I too, would get sucked in trying to be the next Phil Helmuth.

I see where Sergio Garcia is now dating Greg Norman’s daughter – Morgan Leigh Norman, currently a student at Boston College. Can you imagine the golfing kid they would produce? A bad-dressing, over-waggling, Sunday-choking, chronic-whining, golfer.
Great Golf Stat I: Since Tiger Woods missed the cut at the US Open, Phil Mickelson has shot 58 strokes higher than Woods in events they both played in together.
Great Golf Stat II: How did the "rest" of the "Big 5" do at Firestone? Vijay, Ernie, Reteif, and Phil were a collective 25 over par.

The Redskins are either executing one of the greatest pre-season rope-a-dopes in NFL history, or they are in serious trouble. It all adds up to a lot of tea leave reading, and speculation right now. Which in a way, is a lot of fun. The latest quote people have latched onto, is Al Saunders’ proclamation that his offense works “with the right people.” Hmmm. What does that mean, exactly? Could Saunders be less ready to back the 8-car like Gibbs has done the last two years? Stay tuned.
Remember 2000, when the Redskins brought in a new kicker almost weekly during the season trying to find someone to replace chronically injured Brett Conway? (See Husted, Heppner, Bentley and Murray) We joked at the time, that a “white courtesy van” just ran loops from Ashburn to Dulles and back. Well, looks like the van is back. This time, it’s punters. Tuesday, the Skins brought in Toby Gowin and Eddie Johnson. Johnson beat Gowin in the morning punt off, and then burned out his leg and was cut and sent home 8 hours later with an ice pack on hit thigh. Super. Look, this is too late to fix. We need to just stick with the “shank artist” Frost, and close our eyes on any big punt late in a game.

Two incredibly funny and embarrassing media gaffes to amaze you.
The first is how Katie Couric lost 20 pounds without even knowing it! The other is Kyra Phillips of CNN and her “Det. Frank Drebin Moment” in the bathroom during the president’s address.
First Couric, who’s photo was dramatically altered by CBS’s in-house magazine “Watch!” to make her look much more skinny and MILFY than her otherwise frump-shot original. I don’t know if any great journalistic crime was committed, but it does remind you to question EVERYTHING you see these days in print.
On to Phillips. First of all, if you never saw “Naked Gun” you need to rent it now. This exact same thing went down in the movie, and it seemed so silly, that you would never expect it in real life. Ooops.
Now, here’s the real issue.
In her bathroom girl-chat, Phillips calls her sister in-law a “real control freak.” And while that falls short of “fucking bitch who ruined my brother’s life” – for a woman, well there’s not too much difference.
I can just see how frosty Thanksgiving dinner got for the Phillips family. And that poor p-whipped brother of hers, is going to get the passive-aggressive beating of his life for – oh, the next 30 years – by his wife.
“Oh, sorry honey. I guess I’m just a ‘control freak.’ Maybe you should call your sister and tell her….”
Hey buddy. Welcome to hell. Kyra better be giving you any sexual menu item forever after that one!

What Would Irv Have Said?
Hi Steve:
When Bob brought up the other day the things may have been different with Brett had Irv been around, I really got to thinking. Since Holmgren, and likely Wolf departed, and his dad died, Favre has had no one to really fear. Next up, Ray Rhodes and Mike Sherman, who let him run wild. Since he didn't have accountability, he could become more of a diva with no one to bring him down to earth. By the time Thompson and McCarthy came along and weren't willing to let Brett walk all over the team, he had been unaccountable for long enough that he couldn't handle it and resented it. Hurt feelings resulted from him having to answer to someone for a change, and from fewer special "Brett rules".
I am very curious how he handles Mangini, whom I have been told by a Jets fan is hated by the players. And, wait till Mike Lupica shreds him by mid-October. Read the NY press, they are building him up and up, and they will love tearing him down.
See ya, donkey,
Terry Rindt
