Oooooommmmphhhh!

09000d5d80a85b49_gallery_600.jpg

Well, that sure sucked.

What more do you want me to say?

I was reminded by a friend Cowboys asshole I know Mike McGowan of an idiotic post I made on this blog about a month ago, as the Redskins were humming along in the pre-season.

Mike wrote:

Still, I recall a rather optimistic (gushing?) Redskin scouting report published by a local media personality. He said: "On paper, the Skins don't have much to worry about right now. I think strong safety is a hole right now. Everything else is covered.... I'm having a hard time actually a constructing a worst case scenario for this team. I can see 7-9 as a bad year. But I can also [see] 11 wins off in the distance."

Yeah. I'm a dope. The operative word in that was "right now." Of course, in August "right now" NOBODY in the NFL has any "real problems."

I should know better.

Obviously, Jim Zorn needs "trainee" on his badge, because it's going to be an "earn as you learn" kind of season. The failure to use even ONE of your 3 first half timeouts in the red zone is inexcusable.

Ironic then, that the old coach didn't know you couldn't call two timeouts back-to-back, while his replacement doesn't even think to call ONE timeout with three in his pocket!

This was far worse, I think, than not having an effective no-huddle in the 4th quarter, and worse than not understanding that when you need a FG and a TD, it doesn't matter which one comes first so get the "easier" one FIRST.

It all means Zorn has failed to grasp even BASIC NFL head coaching game/clock management tactics. The prospects for him winning a CLOSE game late, with less than 3 full timeouts is very dim, to say the least.

More thoughts....

The Reed Doughty experiment needs to end. I just wonder how long it's going to take. He's a nice kid, who had a tragic medical emergency with his newborn child, and he really is an over-achiever. But for a undersized, slow, 6th round pick, he can't play that position at this level. FURTHERMORE, and I hate to be the insensitive ass about this, he's got a hearing problem that makes him ALMOST DEAF! (Why am I YELLING in ALL CAPS!?)

Read this excerpt from the Washington Post:

"It's not that I can't hear at all, I'm hearing impaired," Doughty said. "But this was the first year that I'd talk to my wife and I'd have to say, 'What was that, sweetie? What did you say?' It was time to do something."

Doughty, who first had hearing loss diagnosed as a child, said he developed skills to help him communicate with coaches and teammates during his career as a three-time academic all-American at Northern Colorado, a division I-AA program. In addition to lip-reading, Doughty would memorize the hand signals used by the defensive line and linebackers as well as the secondary.

When Doughty arrived at Redskins Park, he had to start all over again. "It kind of became a running joke for a little while," said safety Vernon Fox, who also joined the Redskins in 2006. "We knew that if you were not sitting right next to him, he wasn't going to hear exactly what you said to him. We all kind of knew, it became obvious, he had a hearing deficiency."

Said secondary coach Jerry Gray, "We would call his name, and he'd never respond."

REACT: This is NUTS, people! I mean, seriously. It's the N-F-L! You can't afford to be a half-step slow in this league and expect to survive. This kid is half-deaf!? Do you know how many verbal checks and signals are made during an NFL game on defense? You can't have a "system" for one guy who can't hear in place to "compensate" for that!

Finally, a note about my own mental state as a Redskin fan.

I had a calm sort of resolve about last night's fiasco that was oddly comfortable. While in previous years, I would scream and rant and rave, now I just look at it all and go "hmmph."

It is as if I've crossed the Redskins river to the other side. I'm looking at the same rotting, sewage choked football organization that pumps out expensive bildge year after year, but at least now I am UPWIND from it all.

I'm not less of a fan (or am I, if the losses don't sting nearly as much?) it's just I'm more philosophical. I suppose this is how many fans of downtrodden teams in the NFL feel. Or perhaps hostages who once thought about carving their captors with a dull buck knife if they had the chance, who eventually get around to asking everyday: "Soooo... how's your family?"

I'd like to think that Dan Snyder is committed to Jim Zorn for more than one lousy year. But I'm getting too smart to fall for that notion anymore. Forget Obama and McCain screaming about "change coming to Washington" next year.

Change is always happening in Washington with our football team. And that, my fellow Americans, is precisely the problem.

Guess I saw it differently: Jason Campbell had the 'deer in headlights' look. No head coach can overcome that. Vince Lombardi, Bill Walsh, etc. would have a tough time getting 6 wins out of this QB. Sorry Steve, settle in for a LONG year.

how many times did they run first and ten and second and eight and then throw a 6 or 7 yard pass only to be fourth and one. ever think of throwing it to cooley(hes kinda good). how many times are they gonna run portis straight ahead into a brick f'in wall for christ sake. what the hell did this team do in camp?

In another universe, Gregg Williams is the headcoach, Campbell is settling into his second year in Al Saunder's offense nicely and Dan Snyder owns the cowboys.

That universe rocks.

The thought struck me last night that I don't really care anymore. It's been almost 10 years of Danny ownership and he's over exposed and under delivered the product. I was a lifelong avid devotee. Now, I like the game and the NFL, but I just don't have the verve anymore for the 'Skins. I have to believe that if it's happening to me, then it's happening to a number of other fans as well. The NFL and NFLPA better be really careful about their next round of negotiations, because if they don't realize what they have, they won't have it a whole lot longer...

Sad to say, but the Skins are the new Cardinals. Hugo Buckle has positioned the Skins to be the patsy who gives the rest of the NFC East two cheap wins a year. That is the future as far as the eye can see. Until Hugo sells the team. [Doc sobs softly.]

Czabe maybe its still not to late for you to join the cause with the Houston Texans. I can't say I have to much empathy for you, cause I'm a Cowboy season ticket holder.

Did anyone else see the bug-eyed look on Vinny Ceroto's face when the cameras happened to pan to him at some point in the first half. I was stunned. His eyes looked like they were about to pop out, and he looked like he just threw up in his mouth. Madden and Michels did not say anything about it, but the look was priceless. The bottom line is nothing is going to change until the Skins get a REAL GM. Jack Kent Cooke was the ultimate owner because he knew to put the smart football people in place, support them, and then stay the hell out of the way. Why hasn't Danny figured this out? Until he does, the fans are screwed.

Hate to break it to you like this, but you just summarized the feeling of every Green Bay Packer fan from 1972-1992. On the bright side, you only have 10 years left!

I only caught the 4th quarter of the game. I'll readily admit that I'm not a faithful 'Skins fan, but I'll say that they are the only team in the NFC East that I like.
I thought for sure that the interception would get things going their way, but that went nowhere. The shoving match was pretty entertaining, though.
..... oh, and when the announcer says "Clinton Portis," does anyone else get the urge to say "well, huntin' is legal."?

Czabe,
Caught your show (as usual) today on the drive home on 980. Your reference to having "crossed the river" was right on. Sad to say, but I did that last year. So get your lawn chair, bring a 12-pack of your favorite Leine, and smell the garbage floating downstream with the rest of us. We've saved you a nice shady spot under a nice oak tree on the Potomac so you can begin to acclimate yourself to this new philosophy. It's not so bad - at least there are no more tears on game day.

Keep up the good work.

Czabe,
As a lifelong Skins fan living in Indy, I'm trying to recall another team that had an owner take a winning franchise and drive it into the ground. I don't think Homer Simpson could have pulled off such a feat! Danny boy has got to go. Please don't let up on calling him out every chance you get.....

As for last night's game, there are a dozen kids that have mastered Madden on XBox 360 that could have called a better game than Jimmy Z and the crew. Once again, were in for a long pathetic year. Danny, how does it feel to be the doormat of the NFL once again?

randyr Author Profile Page - September 5, 2008 7:52 PM

consider my comments as biased as I am a longtime cowboys fan but....

after watching that first quarter, did not any of you think it was going to be one of those 31-3 games with the redskins with about 100 yards.

first play, sack. and that set the tone for the first quarter.

then the game in the second half devolved to a typical nfc east slug fest with a touch of the west coast offense.

so some measure of hope, I would think.. still can't score but at least the defense with those apparent victims as corner and safety solidifying .

I sat in the stands and watched at BM John Butler drove the Bills franchise into the ground with his horrible free agent signings and drafting. His trades made absolutely no sense, taking quarterbacks because they were good golfers. Drafting Willis McGahee after ruining his knee and knowing he would not be even able to practice for one year.

When he left for San Diego, it was only a matter a time until he worked his magic there. Unfortunately, he died before he could do much damage.

The Bills then decided loser Terry Donahue was the answer. Again, more losing seasons.

The GM has to be a person who can convince the owner their decisions in terms of player/personnel are good or horrible. He has to help steer the team in terms of coaching. In short, the Redskins are screwed until they get a competent GM who is not a puppet for Hugo Buckle or until someone buys the Skins.

Doc Author Profile Page - September 6, 2008 3:12 PM

randyr, I'm afraid you've just about hit the nail on the head. On seeing you're a Cowboys fan, my instinct was to say something like, "talk to me when the Pokes win a playoff game this millenia," but you're spot on with your analysis. Sadly, my "measure of hope" is about 5-11.

Hey hey, ho ho
Hugo Buckle's got to go!

Jayne Wayne Author Profile Page - September 6, 2008 7:23 PM

I'd settle in for a long, agonizing season of disappointment, fellas. From where this gal sits, and the view is unobstructed, Jason Campbell is a decent second string quarterback at best. It doesn't have anything to do with running the west coast offense, the east coast offense, the mountain offense, or the wing-t offense either. He's not the one, and the sooner that is realized, the sooner we can move on. That is all.

randyr Author Profile Page - September 6, 2008 11:57 PM

doc,
thank goodness I still have those 3 super bowl wins in 4 years (in the last millenium) to sustain me as my cowpokes have finally reloaded after 12 long years.

but being a contrarion, the skins have a chance at a strong running game, and campbell at least not throwing interceptins left and right (dallas, tampa bay?) and a defense that will get better. i am feeling more of a 7-9 record.

and doc, I like having strong NFC east teams, no one likes to kick weak sisters around. I would love to have the same skins-cowboys rivalry of the 70s and 80s like my brother and I grew up fighting over. if you pulse cowboy fans now, the eagles and then the giants are the primary rivals, the skins are gradually floating to the level inhabited by the NFC East Cardinals of the past. so like the Pac-10, I root for the NFC EAst unless they are playing my alma mater WSU (and yes they stunk today and courtesy of Fox sports channel I got to see the massacre live) or the Cowboys.
