Owens Suicide Bombshell Rocks NFL!

cover_owens_crazy.jpg

The T.O. bombshell hit this morning, and one of the first calls I took on the air was a guy with a psychotherapy backround saying: “This sounds like classic borderline disorder. Look it up, Czabe.”

So I did.

Here’s a synopsis of various websites explanation of “Borderline Personality Disorder.”

A pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects, and marked impulsivity beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

1. Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment.

2. A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation.

3. Identity disturbance: markedly and persistently unstable self-image or sense of self

4. Impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self-damaging (e.g., spending, sex, substance abuse, reckless driving, binge eating). Recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, or threats, or self-mutilating behavior.

5. Inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger (e.g., frequent displays of temper, constant anger, recurrent physical fights)

6. Transient, stress-related paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms.

Wow. I mean, they might as well just put T.O.’s picture next to the diagnosis, eh? Now that I’ve read this, I start putting all the pieces in place given his past history, and you just say: “Duh. How come we didn’t all see this coming from a mile away?”
Think of these things…

- T.O. catching 22 passes on “Jerry Rice Retirement Day.”
- His TD winner vs. Green Bay, and sobbing like a baby.
- The lashing out at coordinators and QBs on the sidelines.
- The sharpie, the Star, the Ray Lewis dance.
- Calling Jeff Garcia gay.
- Parking in coaches spots with the Eagles.
- Crying on the Donny Duetche show.
- Being so “hurt” by McNabb saying they can win SB without him.

And on, and on, and on.

Stay tuned. This story has just exploded. It will unfold over the next several weeks and months in full glory.

Byron Nelson dies in Dallas at his ranch at the age of 94. He was a great golfer, and a better man. Unlike his crotchety contemporary Ben Hogan, Nelson was warm and open to everybody in and outside of the game.

His game was virtually flawless. While the most notable aspect of his career was the 11 consecutive wins, Nelson was also the inspiration for the USGA’s spec testing machine dubbed: “Iron Byron.”

How good does your swing have to be, when the governing body of the sport says: “Let’s build a robot just like this guy!”

Nelson played before television, and while he loved the game, he loved his ranch even more. Nelson admitted that he saw first place prize money as nothing much more than: “Hey, there’s another tractor” or cow.

I loved seeing Nelson and Snead and Sarazen launch those first white balls at Augusta every spring. Sadly, all three are now gone. Rest in peace, Byron.

Quick Hitters:

The Nationals train derailed coming home from New York. Appropriate, given the season the Nats have had. None of the players were hurt, and it was deemed a “minor” derailment. Sort of like a “minor” heart attack, huh? I’m shocked that baseball teams still travel by train.

If you want some “sweet action” on the NFL, but don’t want to risk going homeless after a bad week, here’s a really cool concept. Pickpools.net. Basically, it’s like fantasy football meets hard core point spread gambling. You need to check it out, to get the full concept. I’ll be competing against Sportstalk 980 listeners for prizes this fall in a pool that only costs $4.99 for the entire year.

NBA training camps begin next week. I think everybody can agree, that this is completely un-necessary. In fact, I am insulted. The NBA should wait at least another month to start their season. We need NBA basketball now, like Paris Hilton needs another thong.

Will Barry Bonds come back next year? Good question, and the Giants are staying tight lipped about it. He’ll be just 21 shy of Aaron if he doesn’t hit any more this week. The team will have 11 free agents, most of whom they will (or should) let go, and start the youth movement. Bonds’ agent says he thinks his guy will play in ’07. Bonds has been non-commital. I say: “Come on, jarhead! Do it. DO IT! Come on back and take down Hank Aaron’s name. You know you want to. You need it. And I want to see how awkward it’ll be for Aaron to stand there and give you a “hug.” Come on Barry. Don’t be a pussy now. Do it!

Chase Utley hits a 3-run home run vs. the Nats that the umps miss completely and call foul. They are in the last 4 days of the season, trailing the Wild Card by a game and a half. And nobody is outraged by this (save for people in Philly). Football fans still cry over that drunk Dennis Erickson “losing his job” because of the call in the Jets game years ago on the Testaverde non-touchdown. How come baseball can’t use TV replay for home run calls only? Can we make the foul-pole (or “fair pole” to be technically correct) larger, or somehow easier to not f-up these calls?

What Would Irv Have Said?
Hi Steve: When Bob brought up the other day the things may have been different with Brett had Irv been around, I really got to thinking. Since Holmgren, and likely Wolf departed, and his dad died, Favre has had no one to really fear. Next up, Ray Rhodes and Mike Sherman, who let him run wild. Since he didn't have accountability, he could become more of a diva with no one to bring him down to earth. By the time Thompson and McCarthy came along and weren't willing to let Brett walk all over the team, he had been unaccountable for long enough that he couldn't handle it and resented it. Hurt feelings resulted from him having to answer to someone for a change, and from fewer special "Brett rules". I am very curious how he handles Mangini, whom I have been told by a Jets fan is hated by the players. And, wait till Mike Lupica shreds him by mid-October. Read the NY press, they are building him up and up, and they will love tearing him down. See ya, donkey, Terry Rindt Read more ...
