Roy's Right: The Logo Must Go!

cover_ncaa_blue_logo.jpg

When he’s not looking like droopy dog or ripping Bonnie Bernstein for being a journalist, Roy Williams of the North Carolina Tar Heels can make a helluva lot of sense.

Roy ripped the NCAA for their idiotic practice of slapping massive, temporary logos on the court during the tournament, all just so no NBA corporate stadium logos show through on the center court circle.

Gasp! I mean, god forbid that ever happens!

Never mind the fact that “HONDA CENTER” is very visible on the baselines in Anaheim. Never mind that “PEPSI CENTER” is very visible on the baselines in Denver. Never mind that the “RBC Center” in Raleigh is named after a friggin’ BANK!

No, the NCAA, in all of their stupidity, probably bought 36 cases of giant, adhesive stickers from some company in Taiwan, and is hell bent on using them all.

Never mind the fact that Roy is right about the high incidence of slippage on these slap-ons. Never mind the fact that the NCAA pays lip service to being all about “student athlete welfare” and the sort.

No, the NCAA is just a bunch of pinheads.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that a logo that size, even in the middle of the court where not as much cutting and planting occurs, but certainly enough, is a total hazard.

A hardwood floor, for one, has ridges in the floorboards that help in giving players a grip. A sticker, does not. A hardwood floor also accumulates layers and layers of wax, cleaner, and YES – shoe rubber – to give it tackiness like a NASCAR track after a few races.

Even if these stickers – which must be a BITCH to get down without wrinkles, or the dreaded “fold over” move where it sticks to itself – were the most advanced 3M could come up with, they would STILL provide different traction than the rest of the court.

And even a stickier “different” is bad, because it could lead to blown out knees.

It reminds me of another idiotic thing the NCAA used to do at the Final Four. A coach I know who had been to one, said the NCAA would break out BRAND NEW basketballs to use in the Final Four. Needless to say, they were slicker than Britney’s toilet seat.

Thus, not only do shooting percentages suffer because the NCAA is a bunch of whores for cash and insist on domes where depth perception is haywire, but ball handling usually does as well.

Now, I think the NCAA uses a synthetic composite ball, so it’s not as bad as before. But still, this is what happens, when nerds in tweed jackets try to run sporting events.

Maybe one day, Roy will have himself and a trainer or two at mid court, pulling mightily a the sticker in total defiance of the NCAA. How great would that be!?

What Would Irv Have Said?
Hi Steve: When Bob brought up the other day the things may have been different with Brett had Irv been around, I really got to thinking. Since Holmgren, and likely Wolf departed, and his dad died, Favre has had no one to really fear. Next up, Ray Rhodes and Mike Sherman, who let him run wild. Since he didn't have accountability, he could become more of a diva with no one to bring him down to earth. By the time Thompson and McCarthy came along and weren't willing to let Brett walk all over the team, he had been unaccountable for long enough that he couldn't handle it and resented it. Hurt feelings resulted from him having to answer to someone for a change, and from fewer special "Brett rules". I am very curious how he handles Mangini, whom I have been told by a Jets fan is hated by the players. And, wait till Mike Lupica shreds him by mid-October. Read the NY press, they are building him up and up, and they will love tearing him down. See ya, donkey, Terry Rindt Read more ...
