That.... Was.... AWESOME! Heheheheheh...

I think the reason we all watch sports, can be boiled down to one thing.

We want to see the “awesome” and the “unexpected.”

What joy it is then, to see both elements encapsulated in a single highlight, as was evident in the Evgeni Malkin breakaway slapshot that he blasted past a helpless Martin Biron last Friday night.

If you missed the play, then here it is. Enjoy every sublime second of it.

For those of you that have played a little bit of hockey, or know the game well, excuse me for explaining it for the more casual fan. My hockey resume it wafer thin, but I did enjoy playing a fair bit of street hockey in high school, intramural “gym hockey” in college, and rec league C-level ice-hockey when I was 10 years younger and forty pounds lighter.

When Malkin breaks in alone, the standard move for a skater of his skill is to chop-chop-chop with a forehand-backhand-forehand move that leads to an easy open net flip. Usually, even the best goalies are helpless against it. It also gives the skater the longest (relative, since it happens so quick) look at where to shoot.

What Malkin did was simply awesome. To cut his engines on his skating just briefly, then wind up at full power and rip a shot past poor Marty Biron from near point blank range was not just a fabulous goal, but it had a nice heaping of “f*** you” slathered on top.

As you can see from the highlight, he had just been CRUSHED earlier, and was still a little woozy. Given the chance for revenge, a simple goal was not enough. Malkin, like any stud athlete, decided to make somebody pay!

There were many such moments this weekend in sports, where you simply sat back and said: “My god, what talent!” Whether it was LeBron pin-cuffing a shot off the backboard or Sergio Garcia landing a wedge on the deck of the 17th hole aircraft carrier under full playoff pressure and nestling it to 4 feet for the win, these are the things that keep us coming back in sports.

Here’s to the “awesome and unexpected” in sports! Huzza, huzzah!

What Would Irv Have Said?
Hi Steve: When Bob brought up the other day the things may have been different with Brett had Irv been around, I really got to thinking. Since Holmgren, and likely Wolf departed, and his dad died, Favre has had no one to really fear. Next up, Ray Rhodes and Mike Sherman, who let him run wild. Since he didn't have accountability, he could become more of a diva with no one to bring him down to earth. By the time Thompson and McCarthy came along and weren't willing to let Brett walk all over the team, he had been unaccountable for long enough that he couldn't handle it and resented it. Hurt feelings resulted from him having to answer to someone for a change, and from fewer special "Brett rules". I am very curious how he handles Mangini, whom I have been told by a Jets fan is hated by the players. And, wait till Mike Lupica shreds him by mid-October. Read the NY press, they are building him up and up, and they will love tearing him down. See ya, donkey, Terry Rindt Read more ...
