Use Inflatable Pilots, They're Much Lighter

blogpic_airplane.JPG

On the one hand, I feel sorry for the airlines. You can’t make a buck on $140 a barrel oil.

On the other hand, f*** the airlines.

Once I took a flight on Continental from Dulles to Santa Barbara, CA. The plane stopped in Bakersfield (which is Dante’s 5th circle of hell on a GOOD day), hit a rock on the landing, popped a tire, and yada yada yada…. Next thing we know, we’re riding a BUS for 4 hours the rest of the way to Santa Barbara.

Anyway.

The lengths to which the airlines are going now to save fuel by cutting weight onboard is truly amazing. Here’s a blurb from a story about it that makes you wonder, what’s next? Mandatory vomiting by the stewardesses before pushing away from the gate?

Up in the cockpit, Delta is studying whether it is feasible to divide the heavy pilot manuals required on each flight between the captain and first officer, so pilots are not toting duplicate sets.

Eventually, the airline wants to eliminate printed manuals and display the information on computer screens, a step that would require government approval.

REACT: Um, I think one set of manuals is perhaps do-able. But computer based instructions on a Boeing 777? No thanks. I can see it now. “Um, tower, this is the cockpit on FT-ONE-SEVEN-NINER. We need a quick email of the PDF file on this bird, we heard a bump in the back, and don’t quite know where the latch for the thinga-majiggy is.”

if they get rid of the manuals for "Czabe" voiceovers on the speaker system on all flights, including tips for passengers from "The Czabe" on what too when the flight is going down...

I'm all for it. :-)

What Would Irv Have Said?
Hi Steve: When Bob brought up the other day the things may have been different with Brett had Irv been around, I really got to thinking. Since Holmgren, and likely Wolf departed, and his dad died, Favre has had no one to really fear. Next up, Ray Rhodes and Mike Sherman, who let him run wild. Since he didn't have accountability, he could become more of a diva with no one to bring him down to earth. By the time Thompson and McCarthy came along and weren't willing to let Brett walk all over the team, he had been unaccountable for long enough that he couldn't handle it and resented it. Hurt feelings resulted from him having to answer to someone for a change, and from fewer special "Brett rules". I am very curious how he handles Mangini, whom I have been told by a Jets fan is hated by the players. And, wait till Mike Lupica shreds him by mid-October. Read the NY press, they are building him up and up, and they will love tearing him down. See ya, donkey, Terry Rindt Read more ...
