Mailbag: July 2008 Archives

Hey Steve:

Although the event itself is quite tragic, the means by which it happened and where they ended up made me think of you and the Daily Czabe. After hearing some of your podcasts (I.e.: man hurt riding pet buffalo, man's dog (Caddy) gets eaten by golf course worker's family), I thought this one would make Moe say... "Good God!". Sorry for the warped sense of humor... I blame my mom for that! Smile emoticon RI police: 24-year-old son killed parents with hoe Mark in Nisky P.S. Love the show big time! Will you be doing any new podcasts in the future?

Czabe, Regarding your discussion of great sports brawls of all time, this one isn't on many people's radar, but it scores high for merit on total mayhem. UAB vs. ODU, late 80s A bogus moving pick call gets a response by fans (only time I ever saw a perfect spiral of a paper cup full of ice…trailing it as if it flew). UAB player gets in argument with fans, goes into stands, fans toss him back on court (GET OUTA HERE), UAB assistant stabs Norfolk cop with a mechanical pencil, Gene Bartow cries fowl claiming ODU coach (Young) incited crowd (he picked up mike and told everybody to stop). Crowd throws chairs at UAB players as they leave court……All on ESPN National TV. James H. Brent, P.E.

Hey Czabe, I'm in DC and missing your AM show (but that's another email). I can't help but to ask the NBA "how's that globalization of the game thing working out?". Now, I know very well that so far this year we've only seen the departure of average/bad to solid bench guy to untested youth head to the Euro leagues for the cash. And now Sasha Vujacic threatning (who is a key player for my Lakers). But imagine the day that one of the bigger players on any team says... hmmm why not head back home, after all "France is better than SAN ANTONIO". And they're willing to basically match my salary. Why not...

Hey Czabe, Wondering if I could bug you for an independent opinion. I am not an avid golfer, yet. When I have occasionally gone with friends, I end up borrowing a set or sharing clubs. I want to start going more, so planned on getting a set. Some advised me to just get a cheap complete box set for around $200 or so. Others suggested used.

Czabe - Big fan. Just wanted to quickly touch on what I heard at the end of the show today. Heard you talkin about your 5 Directv HD tivo's, and was wondering if you thought about just expanding the memory on some of those bad boys, instead of buying a new one. You can get a 1 TB external harddrive on buy.com for about half the cost of buying (leasing) a new HD DVR, plug the hard drive into the back of your DVR, and bam - you have 4-5 times the storage space. Handy for keeping all that extra HD programming. I expanded my DVR memory about 3-4 months ago, and I wish I'd done it sooner. At the very least, it should help consolidate some of those extra recievers. Not sure if you were looking for advice, but I'm offering it anyway. Anyways, love the show. Later - Martin, Nixa MO

Hey Czabe... Back in 1989, Greg Norman won the GMO at Tuckaway Country Club, and I was 15 at the time. My friend's dad was on the board at Tuckaway so I was invited into the winners tent after the contest was over. In walks Greg Norman, hand shakes and all the normal congratulatory stuff. A few minutes later, it dies down and he's standing a few steps from us. I walk over, take off my hat and politely ask him to sign my hat. What response did I get? "Someone get this kid away from me," says Norman. After we get home I tell my mom and dad the story. Next time my mom talks to my grandmother, she tells her the story. My grandmother still roots against Greg Norman to this day. - Mitch in Milwaukee

Steve: Just a few things we need to share that the guys on NFL Sirius (Tim Hasselbeck) don't want to say with the man crushes they have. Favre states on June 20th he told Packers that he wanted to play. What about the day were ready to fly down and he said no he wanted to stay retired. Old Curly mouth Greta didn't ask that one. Why only call his buddies Chris or Steve to state a fact and then when his home town paper talks about the comebach he states that "it is all rumor" and he said how can you believe what the Packers say. Kinda the pot calling the kettle black isn't it. All these things that Favre is mad at should be examined. 1. Didn't sign Moss- Yes it might of helped them but last time I checked the Patriots didn't win the Super Bowl 2. Didn't resign Rivera or Wahle- Last time we checked on these two, Rivera's career ended in Dallas with disc problems and Wahle had 2 un-evenvtful years and cut by Carolina. Good luck to Seattle with him) 3. Didn't give old Mooch an interview- could it just be possible that McCarthy had a great interview and Thompson knew he was the one-just like Minnesota with Childress (we wanted him-that was a close one). When a player says it is not about the money-it really is When a player says that it is not about his suggestions-it really is Favre had a number of chances and he missed, I think he should have to come back and try to win his job with no breaks from training camp routine like they always do. If he feels that is beneath him, trade his ass to Miami and see how bad he really wants to play. Crap to you, Ron Fleischmann

I agree with you that Favre is being a hillbilly and I think he has been doing this for over 3 years already. Being the big drama queen over retiring, like he is the only person on earth who has to ever retire or even be forced out of a job. But, don't you think Rodgers would really like to have him back? Think about it, Rodgers has been in the league for 3 or 4 years now collecting nice checks. If he would have gone to a team that needed a QB right away, do you really think he would be in the league yet or a starting QB? Rodgers probably wants hillbilly to play another 2 or 3 years, that way he (Rodgers) will get a better retirement plan for tenure in the NFL, even as a back up. Start looking at the positives for Rodgers once in a while. Mark Zehren

Czabe... I am sitting here watching the home run derby and I can't contain my excitement. Not because my hometown Brewer Ryan Braun is in the home run derby and not even Josh Hamilton's incredible 28 home runs in round one got me out of my chair... it's what I just saw on the crawler across the bottom of my TV screen... "Billy Packer out as the lead basketball analyst after 27 years on CBS". It's about frickin' time. I know you share the same sentiments & I look forward to hearing your celebratory rant on Bob & Brian. A fellow Steve-O

Today you briefly touched on the CAS decision to uphold the Landis ban. Although I understand your viewpoint, you could not be further off base. First you mention that Landis "sucked wind" the entire race, and pulled a miracle out of his backside. Landis dominated the entire Tour, until one day in the mountains where he "boinked" and lost over 8 minutes. Yes, the next day he made the most incredible ride the Tour has ever witnessed and brought himself back into contention, ultimately over taking the yellow jersey in the last individual time trial. All of this according to you, due to one quick doping cycle.
