I’m not going to sit here and say I’m smarter than your average NFL executive. But I think I’m within the margin of error. The moves that have been made – and not made – since Cam Newton sulked off the podium in San Francisco in THIS LEAGUE* have been truly amazing.
It’s a bundle of head scratchers, panic moves, laughable over-reaches, and remixes of bad ideas already proven to be just that: bad ideas.
Now we have the Eagles moving up in the first round to grab…. uh, mystery meat.
But don’t worry. They are SURE they will get “their” guy in the Carson Wentz/Jared Goff derby. Or, if you don’t believe that, then it’s okay, because Howie Roseman says it’s like chocolate and vanilla ice cream.
Besides, it’s all delicious ice cream anyway, right kids!?
Ohhhhhkay. Never mind that some people HATE chocolate, or sausage. Just step back for a minute and think about what Roseman and the Eagles are doing.
They are trading multiple future assets, to draft a player who is NOT ready to start right now, will cost a LOT of money, and they are not even 100% certain to get the “flavor” they prefer.
To think that two different college QB’s are BOTH equally good, in equal ways, that fit your team, coach, and personnel just right, and are worth multiple picks to acquire…. IS FUCKING INSANE!
And if you believe the “pundits” and “experts” the team ahead of the Eagles, the Rams, are STILL DECIDING ON WHICH GUY THEY WANT!
Madness.
There are a lot of very weak, highly speculative theories out there as to why the Eagle and Rams have pushed “all in.” One of those theories, is that the proliferation of spread offenses in high school and college, is choking out every last prototype “pocket” passing QB capable of playing the pro game.
Like these two guys are the last helicopters out of Saigon. Get ’em now, there not making any more!
Really.
As if these personnel geniuses can see 2-3 years down the road and be certain that no similar prospects will emerge from the 128 D1 programs (not to mention the 1-AA’s). That’s laughable.
Of course, guys like Roseman himself just said last year that trading up is a bad idea.
“But the history of trading up for one player, when you look at those trades, isn’t good for the team trading up and putting a lot of resources into it.
“Because the guys who are really good at the draft, if you’re hitting on 60 percent of your first-round picks, that’s a pretty good track record. And then it’s dropping as you go through the rounds. So really, the more chances you get, the more tickets to the lottery you get, the better you should be doing.”
When Chip Kelly was bumrushed out in December, because among other things he lacked “emotional maturity”, there was a feeling that HE was the personnel idiot, and Roseman was the more level head.
Well, is it possible, just possible, that Kelly knew Roseman better, and that’s why he demanded full control? I’m not saying Kelly’s moves were genius – obviously, several of them completely flopped – but he only had 1 year of “full control” to make it work.
History has shown us, one of these QB’s is gonna suck. And it may be both. Good luck to the Eagles, and to a lesser extent the Rams. At least with LA, they have first pick, and need a “brochure face” to sell tickets in a new town.
The Eagles have three generally bad ideas now at QB. I can’t wait to see which one is the “least bad” idea.
